Internet scammers promising £400 as part of HMRC backlog clearance to steal personal details
Internet scammers are reportedly circulating emails claiming to be from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), asking recipients to enter their personal details and avail a payout. According to the Daily Mail, there are six million people who have received such a hoax mail which promises around £400 each, citing that they are entitled to the amount as HMRC is clearing a Pay As You Earn backlog.
HMRC has refuted such mails, and has warned people not to disclose any personal details. HMRC said it would never contact those who are owed money in this way, and have warned recipients to forward such mails to HMRC and then delete the message, according to the Daily Mail. A spokeswoman for HMRC said, 'We only ever contact customers who are due a tax refund in writing by post.
"We currently don't use telephone calls, emails or external companies in these circumstances. 'If anyone receives an email claiming to be from HMRC, please send it to phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk before deleting it permanently." "HMRC will do everything possible to ensure those receiving this email know what steps to take to protect their information, and we are working closely with other law enforcement agencies to target the criminals behind this serious crime and see them brought to justice." she added.
